Here at Ask Baby&Junior Cotswold we have been hearing lots lately about Your Final Fitness Formula so we caught up with founder and fitness coach Laura Milne to find out more…

Eating healthily and keeping fit is tough for busy Mum’s. I know how important it is to all you Mum’s out there to be healthy and fit so you can run around with the kids and not be ill all the time. The problem is I see many Mum’s struggle every day; struggling with not having enough energy to run around after the kids, cook dinner, wash, iron etc, headaches, backache, bloated, poor skin and weak immune system. Then on top of all that many of you are simple just not happy with the way they look or feel. Kelly is a mum of two young children in Cheltenham; she needed some guidance and joined Your Final Fitness Formula 4 weeks ago. Have a read of her email here.

Kelly even brought her children along to the sessions, as she didn’t have child care. Not only did Kelly get all the results she mentioned in her email she also lost 11lbs in just four weeks. Your Final Fitness Formula is now even more perfect for Cheltenham’s busy Mums like you. There are three times slots for you to chose between. You have the choice of 6am at St Edwards Junior School or 9:45am at Naunton Park on Mon, Wed & Fri and then evenings at 7pm on a Mon, Tues & Thur at St Edwards Junior School.

Ladies can mix up the sessions and come to 3-5 a week at no extra cost. The nutrition, recipes, guidance and private support group is what makes it so special and gets you results. Buggies & children are welcome to the sessions, there is also a park that the kids can play on right next to where we workout so perfect for summer holidays. The next program starts on 3rd June and it runs for 4 weeks, email Laura on laura@finalfitnessformula.com or visit www.glosladiesgethealthy.com

As a Mum feeding your children healthy dinners can sometimes be tricky but here are two of my winning recipes that kids just love. I hope they are winners with your brood.

We all know it – children need outdoor space and exercise to keep them happy. After months of being cooped up inside it’s likely that your kids are grumpy, grouchy, under-exercised and in some serious need of vitamin D. We’ve hunted down some great physical challenges you can all try, plus some new adventuring that might help you rediscover your family mojo and perhaps some old muscles too!

Wheely Good Exercise

Cycling is a brilliant way to get everyone outside and exercising, and you don’t have to be Bradley Wiggins to feel the benefits. The great thing is, if you’ve already got the bikes, it’s free! But if you’re concerned about using roads with a young family in tow, then why not try some of the specific off-road trails the region has to offer. South Cerney Cotswold Water Park has loads of routes that run round the lakes and off the roads, plus you can always take a picnic and stop off at the man-made beach for a breather and splash around. If you drop in at Go By Cycle www.go-by-cycle.co.uk, they will be able to give you directions, plus they also hire out bikes, babyseats, tag-ons and trailers to get everyone kitted out.

On the other side of the Cotswolds head for the Cannop Valley Cycle Centre, Forest of Dean, where you can wind through the forest on the Family Cycle Trail or hit an adrenaline high on one of the more challenging mountain biking routes. Check www.wyedeantourism.co.uk for more information, plus details of where you can hire bikes and equipment.

Finally, over at Far Peak near Northleach there are plenty of safe cycle routes on its gorgeous 25-acre site, or you could attempt one of the amazing routes that connects the beautiful north Cotswold villages, maps are available to hire from the Far Peak centre.

Water Wings

Don’t think that because we don’t live near the coast you can’t get your family interested in waterspouts. With plenty of former quarries now converted to lakes there are loads of opportunities to get older kids having fun on the water. Sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking and even snorkeling are all available to try at the Cotswold Water Park, near Cirencester. Try Adventure Zone, for amazing holiday adventure days based around water-orientated activities. Parents can choose to join in, or leave kids there to get on with it, www.adventure-zone.co.uk. Or if you want to sign up for a course specifically relating to one skill check out www.southcerneyoutdoor.co.uk, here you can learn all about the joys of paddling, sailing or windsurfing, under the watchful eye of qualified instructors.

For some proper beach action Cotswold Country Park & Beach, www.cotswoldcountrypark.co.uk boasts the largest inland beach in the UK, great for younger ones who will just enjoy the simple pleasures of paddling and pottering in the sand. Other facilities include boat and kayak hire, cafes and wonderful lakeside walks so well worth a trip!

Croft Farm Waterpark, www.croftfarmleisure.co.uk, near Tewkesbury also offer courses in windsurfing, canoeing and sailing, plus its smaller lake is much less intimidating for little people – check it out to see what they have on offer for your family.

Play Hard

Sometimes it’s difficult to persuade kids that exercise is fun, but there are ways you can get them to do it without them even noticing – here at Ask Baby&Junior we love a good adventure playground to get heart rates racing.

Although it’s a little further afield we can’t resist including the awesome adventure playground at Bowood House in Wiltshire if you fancy making a day of it. Hailed as one of the best in the country, this outdoor adventure wonderland for the under 12s will have them playing for hours. A full-size pirate ship, flying fox, trampoline, death slides and scramble nets will keep the thrill-seekers occupied, whilst a newly-built area for the under 7s will hopefully satisfy those who aren’t quite so daring, with low bridges, stepping stones and balance beams. www.bowood-house.co.uk.

Slightly closer to home is the fantastic fort at Sudeley Castle, Winchcombe, with loads of steps there’s no way they won’t be using every single muscle they have to keep up with each other as they wind their way through the fort, hide out in the tunnels and whoosh down the slides. www.sudeleycastle.co.uk.

Just 20 minutes from Tewkesbury is the brilliant Eastnor Castle (home to the Big Chill Festival), boasting not only a brilliant adventure playground and a Burma rope bridge, but a junior assault course too.

Lastly, but by no means least, at Cattle Country, near Stroud, older kids can run wild in ‘Berkeley Castle’ a wicked fort with zip wire, bridges and towers, plus there’s a giant scramble net and children’s assault course, where you could play timed games to get them hot and sweaty!

Little League

For tiny tearaways (under 2s) you could try the fantastic water play area in Evesham, located in the great park in the centre of town, where little ones can run between the sprays, jump in the puddles and splash around – head out during the week and you should avoid all the school kids too. More details at www.wychavon.gov.uk. From the age of 3+ (minimum height 1.05m) children can use the Jungle Parc Adventure Course at Lydiard House Swindon, with over 50 different activities suitable for children, there’s plenty to keep them amused and on the move. www.lydiardpark.org.uk.

Take It To The Max

Finally, if you’ve got an extreme sport dude or dudette in your house who wants something a bit more thrilling, why not check out Little Monsters Morning at wmski.com, the waterski centre based at South Cerney Lakes. During the school summer holidays they run sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday mornings for kids aged 7-10 years.

Once you are blessed with the wonders of parenting many things change and evolve. And one of these is ‘early hours night clubbing’ and enjoying ‘hedonistic’ nights. In the exhausting yet exhilarating haze of late night feeding, broken sleep and general parenting duties, ‘Ravey Dave’ soon becomes ‘Civilised Charlie’ and ‘Party Pickle Patricia’ morphs very quickly into ‘Captain Sensible’. Those disco dancing daylight returns disappear into the horizon quicker than a puff of steam escaping from your steriliser unit.

But this is not necessarily a bad thing. Quite a relief in fact. Here at Ask Baby&Junior we believe it is something to be embraced. After all, this is just the next chapter in your journey of being part of something much bigger and more meaningful. So what’s the alternative for muso-lovin’ parents that are keen to let loose and re-capture their youth but with the entire flock in the flow? Festivals for the family, that’s what!

Britain’s best-loved family, folk and world music festival Wychwood, returns to the picturesque Gloucestershire countryside, home of Cheltenham Racecourse from 31st May to 2nd June. Returning for its ninth annual outing 2013’s Wychwood Festival promises to deliver an enticing entertainment program suitable for all the family from adults to teenagers and children alike.

Music comes courtesy of a host of nostalgic and modern-day artists including 80’s legends The Human League, pop starlet Kate Nash and folk sensation Sam Lee. Friday will officially be ‘Feel Good Friday’ with the sensational 90’s legends Soul II Soul kicking off a weekend of festival fun with big-hitters Toploader and extended opening hours to give visitors a full day of additional entertainment. Sunday’s main stage opens with CBeebies’ very own gardening hero Mr Bloom and a spot of noisy story telling across the weekend in the Roald Dahl Museum. BBC6 Music and Radio 2 host Craig Charles brings his popular funk and soul radio show to the festival, whilst musical comedy genius Bill Bailey will headline Sunday’s main stage.

Another exciting addition to the music offering is collaboration with London promoter Smashing Blouse, who will be curating Saturday’s Big Top stage. Championing new and up-and-coming acts, Smashing Blouse has invited acts such as the enchanting Lucy Rose and much hyped Mausi, bands Cave Painting, Public Service Broadcasting and History of Apple Pie.

Moreover, Wychwood Festival is so much more that a music festival, with an enviable program of children’s literature, poetry, theatre and dance workshops, comedy and even a beer festival courtesy of Wychwood’s very own brewery. With over 70 workshops on offer, from musical theatre to Ukulele playing to clay modeling, there really is something for everyone at Wychwood Festival.

Wychwood leads the field when it comes to delivering entertainment that can be enjoyed by each member of the family, young or old. It is the only festival in the UK to have a dedicated Children’s Literature Festival in association with Waterstones, the UK’s largest book retailer, which hosts some of the biggest and best children’s authors the UK has to offer for a series of readings and activities. Not only this but the team from the ever-popular Roald Dahl Museum & Story Telling Centre will be returning this year to help children delve into the world of the classic author and for the first time this year Wychwood will welcome the Booktrust to the festival to educate children and parents alike in ways to make literacy fun. All this really does make for an unrivaled children’s program across the weekend.

Also new to this year’s agenda is DocTent, a unique and never-before-seen space where festival-goers are invited to delve into the world of documentary film. There will also be the chance to play a part in the extraordinary WychDoc Project. A truly collaborative effort, this will be a documentary filmed and edited entirely by festival-goers and free to view during and after the weekend.

For the very first time at Wychwood, the incredible Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain have invited festival-goers to be a part of the ensemble for an exclusive one-off performance. Be sure to bring your ukuleles to the festival and attend one of the workshops to find out more…

Wychwood Festival takes place on Cheltenham Racecourse from 31st May-2nd June 2013. Weekend Festival Tickets for Adults are £120, Under 10’s go free but must register for a ticket. Day Tickets are available from £37 for Adults. Visit www.wychwoodfestival.com for more information and to buy tickets.

In their 13th year, Giffords proudly present, Lucky 13 – music, magic and mystery. Giffords Circus, the ultimate British summer experience, launches Lucky 13, a glamorous new show about family, gypsies, superstition, magic and mystery.

Produced by Nell Gifford, Lucky 13 will open in Broadway on May 16th. Directed by the critically acclaimed Cal McCrystal, whose repertoire includes One Man, Two Guvnors and The Dictator, his comedy genius will once again guide their travelling troupe along a magical and hilarious journey to the village greens of the Cotswolds this summer, aided by assistant director and previous Giffords Circus star John Walton.

As ever a triumphant cacophony of musicians will fill the tent with fantastical sounds. This year a wild Serbian Gypsy trio battle a delicate classical ensemble for the spotlight under the watchful eye of Music co-ordinator Nick Hooper who joins the show for the first time, from the Harry Potter films!

Wilder and more magical than ever, this year’s show will take its audiences back in time to mysterious and foreign lands where fire, magic, puppets, illusion, dancing, hilarity, horses and Brian the goose, will star alongside world-renowned acrobats, jugglers, hand balancers, wirewalkers, magicians, tap dancers and aerial artists from all around the globe. This year they are joined by Hungarian aerial sensation Imre Bernath and Argentinean magician extraordinaire, Maximiliano Stia, as well as firm favourites Bibi and Bichu the jugglers, Pat and Kate- the vintage hand balancers, not forgetting the wonderful Ukrainian acrobats, the eccentric Nancy Trotter as Andromeda and the much-loved circus Lothario Tweedy the clown hot from the Cheltenham Everyman theatre Panto.

Giffords Circus began in 2000, set up by Nell and Toti Gifford; to date it has delighted audiences of over half a million people with its travelling vintage extravaganza. Set in Serbia, in the mysterious world of the gypsies, Lucky 13 offers family audiences a dazzling adventure with the most wonderful live music you will hear anywhere in the world.

Quite simply this is a must-see for the local parenting community. Absolutely the finest ‘circus-chic’ for the Cotswolds. For more info visit www.giffordscircus.com.

GOING DOWN

Elitist Motherhood… The Times recently featured an article on a new maternity retreat opening on the Kings Road, Chelsea, London, (yes Kings Road, where you go for great shopping!) where new mums can go to learn about being a mother. You can have a restful few days postpartum to get used to parenthood, with round the clock support on hand, and special bonding time with baby – wonderful and at £800 a night, we’ll all be signing up for this one sharpish, as soon as we win the Lottery! We’ll stick to friends, family, NCT and breastfeeding groups for our support!

Holiday Price Hike… arghghghg, it’s just not fair, with all of us desperate for a bit of sunshine after the dark cold winter why do holiday companies insist on putting up prices during the school holidays? We’re all feeling the pinch during this double dip, so why not give families a break, keep the prices manageable, and make life much happier for all of us – please.

Headmaster Stephen McKernan is delighted with the outcome of the recent visit by the Independent Schools Inspectorate at St Edward’s Junior School where the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) has been described as “outstanding” in every aspect of its provision.

The Early Years Foundation Stage covers the education of children up to the age of 5. The EYFS has benefited from a six figure investment, which was the first project undertaken by the Headmaster when he arrived two years ago.

The Inspection Team described the leadership and management of the early years provision as being outstanding and noted the excellent tracking to evaluate progress of individual children. They commented that at the end of the children’s time in the early years, extremely high profile scores show that the expectations of Early Learning Goals have been well exceeded. The provision for the children’s well-being was outstanding and the Inspection Team were impressed with the extremely well resourced rooms and striking Italian inspired art studio. In this dedicated art room paint brushes are kept in pots made from a fallen tree in the grounds and the room is full of coloured paints, crayons, felts and feathers. “The space is a real inspiration and in this short term the confidence and creativity of the children has blossomed” commented St Edwards.

Lynn Young, Manager of St Edward’s Kindergarten and Kate France, Head of the Infant Department are jointly responsible for the Early Years provision and were confident that the inspectors would be impressed.

Kate France commented, “We are delighted that the inspectors recognised the happiness and enthusiasm our children experience each day as they play and learn. The staff work exceptionally hard to provide excellent care and education and the report is a tribute to their dedication and expertise. We have developed an excellent partnership with our parents and we are all committed to ensuring our children reach their full potential in every way.”

Lynn Young added, “A child’s formative years provide the foundation upon which their life is built and we have always worked hard to ensure we provide the very best start in life. I am particularly thrilled that the Inspectors were impressed with our Italian inspired art room. We have just invested in this space and it has been incredible to see even the youngest of children grow in confidence and creativity. We are delighted that the Inspection Team have given us this outstanding report”.
